CQ Politics: Online Political Sites Pushing Boundaries of Campaign Law

The 2008 election cycle has seen a dramatic expansion in the use of the Internet to engage people in the political process. The Daily Query

House Republicans Steve Chabot, Jean Schmidt and Michael R. Turner have teamed up to bolster their re-election bids with a new joint fundraising committee called Ohioans Together 2008. Schmidt and Chabot have very competitive races in November and the DCCC has targeted their seats as potential takeovers by including their challengers in its Red to Blue fundraising initiative.
Schmidt trails Victoria Wulsin in fundraising by close to $200,000, while Chabot has a $700,000 edge on Steve Driehaus. Turner’s race is currently rated as safe for the incumbent, who has raised just under $1 millions for his re-election campaign.

CQ Politics: Fundraising Loopholes Allow Lobbyists to “Honor” Lawmakers at the Conventions

The national party conventions have long been the targets of big spending by corporations and interest groups looking to grab a piece of the political action. But they are also a rich target of opportunity for elected officials and candidates looking to pad their campaign wallets. And thanks to a loophole in the recent lobbying and ethics law, they also provide a channel for lobbyists to host fundraising events for individual lawmakers. Full Story

CQ Politics: Healing Clinton-Obama Rift Not Just About Bruised Feelings

A key theme at this convention is healing the rift between Obama and Hillary - and her supporters. The wager seems to be that putting women front and center at the convention could help assuage the bitterness these voters feel at the lack of a female candidate. But at play are not just bitter women and bruised feelings: women’s groups are powerful fundraisers. Full Story
